If you’re considering switching auto insurance, we recommend taking a few minutes to review the details before making a change.
A lower monthly price can look appealing, but price is only one part of the decision. Coverage limits, deductibles, discounts, fees, and the effective date of the new policy can all make a difference.
Here are five questions we recommend asking before you switch.
1. When Does My New Coverage Begin?
This is one of the first things we suggest confirming.
Before canceling your current policy, make sure you know the exact date and time your new coverage becomes active.
We recommend avoiding any gap between your old policy and your new one. Even a short period without coverage could leave you responsible if something happens while you’re driving.
Before making the switch, ask:
- What date does my new policy start?
- Is coverage active immediately after payment?
- Will I receive proof of insurance right away?
Once you’ve confirmed your new coverage is active, you can then coordinate the cancellation of your existing policy.
2. Are There Any Cancellation or Other Fees?
Before you cancel your current policy, we recommend checking whether your insurance company charges any fees for ending coverage before the policy term is complete.
Cancellation rules can vary by company and state.
You may also want to ask the new provider whether there are any additional charges beyond the quoted premium.
These could include:
- Policy fees
- Installment fees
- Payment processing fees
- Fees for certain payment schedules
We suggest asking for the total cost so you know what you’ll actually be paying—not just the advertised monthly rate.
3. What Discounts Are Included in My Quote?
Auto insurance companies may offer a variety of discounts, but they aren’t always the same from one company to another.
We recommend asking which discounts have already been included in your quote and whether you may qualify for any others.
Depending on the provider, discounts may be available for things such as:
- Safe driving
- Multiple vehicles
- Bundling auto and home or renters insurance
- Driving fewer miles
- Automatic payments
- Paying the policy in full
- Vehicle safety feature
- Certain driver education programs
Even if a quote already looks competitive, it can be worth asking whether additional discounts are available.
4. Could My Rate Change After the First Policy Term?
We think this is an important question because the rate you receive today may not necessarily remain the same forever.
Insurance premiums can change at renewal for many reasons, including changes in driving history, location, vehicle information, coverage selections, discounts, or broader pricing changes from the insurance company.
We recommend asking:
- How long is this rate valid?
- Is this a six-month or 12-month policy?
- Are any introductory discounts included?
- Could any of the current discounts expire at renewal?
You may not be able to know exactly what a future renewal will cost, but understanding the policy term and discounts can give you a clearer picture of what you’re signing up for.
5. What Deductible Applies?
When comparing policies, we recommend looking closely at the deductible.
Your deductible is generally the amount you agree to pay out of pocket on certain covered claims before your insurance coverage applies.
For example, a policy with a $1,000 deductible may have a different premium than a policy with a $500 deductible.
That means two policies with similar monthly prices may provide very different coverage.
We suggest checking the deductible for both collision and comprehensive coverage, since they may not always be the same.
Ask:
- What is my collision deductible?
- What is my comprehensive deductible?
- How would my premium change with a different deductible?
The goal is to find a balance between what you pay for the policy and what you’d be comfortable paying out of pocket if you ever need to make a claim.
Take a Few Minutes Before You Switch
Switching auto insurance doesn’t have to be complicated, but we recommend looking beyond the monthly price.
Before choosing a new policy, make sure you understand:
- When the coverage begins
- Whether there are additional fees
- Which discounts are included
- How long the quoted rate applies
- What deductibles you’ll be responsible for
We also recommend comparing the new policy directly with your current coverage whenever possible.
A few extra questions now can help you better understand what you’re getting before you make a change.
